Døtre av Norge, Newspaper of Preserving our Norwegian heritage... |
Our tabloid-sized newspaper is usually sixteen pages, and is published every other month. It is sent to both regular members of the lodges and to the associate members of the Grand Lodge, our advertisers, and to organizations with whom we exchange subscriptions. Some of advertisers give away complimentary copies of the paper.
Content varies according to season and upcoming events, but every issue has a Presidents message, contact information for each lodge, lists of members joining and those passing, and feature stories about Norwegian or Norwegian-American people, history, arts, exhibits, movies, books and activities.
Sarah Thorson Little occasionally writes a column called "The Norwegian Root Cellar" that has general information about tracing Norwegian ancestry or answers to specific questions regarding an individual sister's roots. Sarah is a past President of the Seattle Genealogical Society, and the instructor for the genealogical certification program at the University of Washington. She also is a member of Valkyrien Lodge #1. Marietta Ronnestad, another member of Valkyrien Lodge, contributes articles on Norwegian cooking and baking. Kumla, which are potato balls, were the subject of her most recent article.
There are book reviews in nearly all issues of the paper on Norwegian or Norwegian-American books about history, fiction, cooking, travel, crafts, textiles, and culture. Recent issues have included reviews of Astri, My Astri by Deb Nelson Gourley and Nikolai's Fortune by Solveig Torvik. If you wish to have a book reviewed in our paper, please contact our managing editor, Roberta Kay Morrow.
We do include advertising. Current commercial and lodge ad rates and due dates are available online and additional information is available by contacting: Roberta Morrow. Each bi-monthly issue reaches more than 1300 Scandinavian women. We limit ad content to Scandinavian-related businesses and businesses of members of Daughters of Norway. Daughters of Norway is a non-profit corporation, and accordingly our intent is to recoup costs and keep our members informed about Scandinavian related products and events. (Please note that US Postal Service regulations do not permit us to carry ads from travel agencies.) If you are interested in advertising with us, contact our Business Manager.
If you have an idea for a story, please contact the managing editor, Roberta Kay Morrow. We do not pay for stories, but we do lavish praise and adoration on our authors. Lodge Scribes and Lodge contributing writers, please review tips on writing submissions found on the Members Only Page.
If you would like to receive our newspaper, we invite you to join Daughters of Norway! See the Membership page for information and start your subscription with the next issue.
