Exhibition featuring works of three award-winning artists exploring themes of climate change, landscape and nature in Greenland (painter Maria Coryell-Maritin’s An Expeditionary Artist in Greenland) , Norway (Watercolor artist Eliot O’Hara: Watercolors of Norway) and Iceland (Caryl Utigard photographer’s Birds of Iceland). 3: I AM NORSK GENEALOGY SEMINAR ...10am – 4pm, Sons of Norway Oslo Lodge (2-35), 1018 18th Street, Bremerton (next to Olympic College's main parking lot). Enjoy a full day of learning about Norway and how to research your ancestors in a warm atmosphere of Norwegian friends and cultural artifacts. $20 registration fee (register by April 15) plus optional lunch at $10.00. 10: ØYSTEIN BAADSVIK CONCERT with the BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ... 8 pm, Bakersfield Symphony Center, 1328 34th Street, Suite A, Bakersfield, California. Rarely heard concert music for tuba will be played by the internationally acclaimed virtuoso Øystein Baadsvik with the Bakersfield Symphony. Mr. Baadsvik is the only tuba virtuoso to have carved out a career exclusively as a soloist, rather than becoming a member of an orchestra or accepting a teaching post. His multi-faceted musical career as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist has taken him all over the world. The unique virtuosity and musicality Mr. Baadsvik’s brings to the tuba has established him as the exemplar of the instrument. 13: GALLERY TALK – MARIA CORYELL-MARTIN ... 7pm, Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. Seattle’s expeditionary artist presents her Greenland work, explaining the why she went there, the what she did, and how she completed her work that is exhibited at the Museum May 2 to June 1st.
15: LECTURE ON RESETTLEMENT OF NORWEGIAN JEWS AFTER WWII ... 7pm at the Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. Seattle’s Dr. Eugene Normand will speak about this little known historical event which describes the resettlement of close to 600 Jewish refugees from war-torn Europe in Norway in 1946. This lecture is closely connected to the panel exhibit of the same name that will be on display at the Museum from May 6 through June 29, 2008. Tickets can be reserved by contacting Sharmon Cooper at 206-789-5707 ext 10 from April 8 to May 23, 2008. A suggested donation for individual films and lectures: $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
17: SYTTENDE MAI AT THE NORDIC HERITAGE MUSEUM … 10am-5:30pm (special hours). Nordic food and drinks are for sale in the Nordic Café in addition to free hands-on craft activities for kids on each of the three floors of the Museum. 17: SYTTENDE MAI PARADE SAN FRANCISCO ... 11:15am at Crissy Fields, San Francscio, California parade begins. There will be games for children, youth and adult as well as sales of ice cream, soda, and hot dogs.
17: NORWEGIAN NATIONAL PARTY ... 6pm at the Seamen's Church, 2454 Hyde Street, San Francscio, California. The party includes a speech by General Consul Are-Jostein Norheim and a piano concert by Lawerence Holmefjord-Sarabi. Coffee, cookies and ice cream available. $5.00 entrance fee.
17: BALLARD'S SYTTENDE MAI PARADE ... 3 - 5pm parade begins near Adams School in Ballard at the northwest correner of 62nd and 24th Avenue NW. The route follows south to Market Street and eastward to Bergen Place. This year's parade is lead by eight Daughters of Norway members with flags in honor of the 100 year birthday for both the Daughters of Norway's and Thelma Lodge (Daughters of Norway). A luncheon will also be held that day at noon to 2pm, Leif Erikson Hall, 2245 NW 57th Street, Seattle, Washington. 17: SYTTENDE MAI DINNER ... 6pm: Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. Norwegian Constitution Day or grunnlovsdag, commonly known as Syttende Mai (the 17th of May) and is a celebration of the day in 1814 when Norway ’s constitution was signed in the town of Eidsvoll, Norway. The Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce and Nordic Heritage Museum will host a dinner at the Museum. Come welcome Parade Grand Marshal Hanne Krogh, a popular Norwegian recording artist at the Museum! The Museum exhibits will be open and included in the price. 19: FRIGG CONCERT ...8pm at the McEachern Auditorium, Museum of History and Industry, McCurdy Park, 2700 24th Avenue East, Seattle,Washington. Frigg is a multitalented Finnish-Norwegian group of seven musicans who offer fresh Scandinavian folk fiddling accompanied by fretted instruments, upright bass and endless energy. The style they represent is a mixture of Kaustinen (Finland) and Nord-Trondelag (Norway) – traditions flavoured with a taste of Americana and Irish folk music. Samples of their music are available on their MySpace site. Advance tickets are on sale at Dusty Strings,3406 Fremont Avenue North, Seattle. All proceeds from this concert benefit KBCS 91.3FM, Community Radio.
22: FILM AND LECTURE: THE RESCUE OF THE DANISH JEWS … 7 pm: Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. University of Washington’s Professor Marianne Stecher Hansen’s lecture entitled A Moment in History, The Rescue of the Danish Jews in 1943 will precede a screening of the film The Danish Solution – The Rescue of the Jews in Denmark. In October 1943 during the Nazi occupation of Denmark nearly all Jewish citizens, numbering over 7,000, were ferried at night to neutral Sweden with the widespread cooperation of ordinary Danish citizens, local fishermen, and Resistance members. Professor Stecher Hansen will tell this well documented story interwoven with memories of her father who took part in the rescue operation. 3: WORLD WAR II IN THE NORTH: FINLAND ... 7-9pm at Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. Associate Professor Andrew Nestingen presents a lecture on Finland during World War II. The film Mother of Mine follows the lecture. It tells the story of Finnish children that were sent to Sweden during the war. Questions and answers. Suggested donation of $5 for museum members and $10 for non-members.
8: ANCORA CONCERT: SCANDINAVIAN SONGS OF THE SEA ... 4-6:30pm, Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. This Seattle based women's choir present choral works from various Nordic countries and showcases a suite of four Finnish pieces titled Songs from the Sea (Lauluja Mereltä). Refreshments provided. 10: DJOFLAEYJAN (DEVIL'S ISLAND) FILM .. .7:00pm at Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, Washington. As part of the Museum's World War II series, this film explores postwar Iceland, based on the novel of the same name. The film takes place in Reykjavik shortly after the British and American occupation armies have left the country. The bunkers they had used were taken over by lower-class people pouring into capital. The film tells the sory of the struggle and humourous lives of these people during those difficult times. $5 Museum members, $10 non-members.
